EFM
EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY
Education for Ministry (EFM) is an important part of adult Christian education at Emmanuel parish. EFM provides the opportunity to discover how to best respond to our call to ministry by providing an in-depth and practical theological education.
EFM is a four-year program developed and supported by the University of the South. Class members meet weekly for 34 weeks each year in a 2 ½ hour seminar led by a trained and experienced EFM Mentor. In the four years, participants study the Hebrew Testament, the Christian Testament, church history, ethics and ministry in-the-world.
Importantly, students learn how to apply this new knowledge to daily life through regular Theological Reflections (TR) on real-world issues. Working from several theological models, participants examine student-presented case studies of actual events and their own beliefs in relation to our culture and the traditions of our faith.
The academic program from our texts is enhanced by participant-designed worship services and informative special lessons on a wide variety of related topics. Each year is highlighted by the presentation of each student’s Spiritual Autobiography and a description of that person’s personal faith journey.
In June 2009 we celebrated the accomplishments of the first seven Emmanuel EFM graduates. Please join the Parish in offering special congratulations to the following EFM members who have completed the full four-year program: Joyce Burghardt, Barbara Evans, Chris Kenady, Leslie Murdock, Betsy Nelson, Patty Thompson and June West.
If you are interested in understanding more about EFM and how you might participate in the program, please call me at 360-376-6166.
