THE FOOD BANK AND DINNER KITCHEN

Serving those in need on Orcas Island …

Our beautiful island has a significant, though often hidden, population in need of food and often shelter, too.   Weekly more than 100 people come to the Food Bank for groceries and a hot lunch.  Members of this Emmanuel ministry team help stock shelves and prepare and serve lunch once or twice a month for Food Bank clients. Our efforts, together with the efforts of other churches and community service organizations, help to meet some of the needs on Orcas, but, alas, there was a “Dinner Gap” … no organization was serving dinner on a regular basis to our island brothers and sisters.

The Dinner Kitchen ministry of Emmanuel is attempting to fill this “dinner gap” by providing hot meals in the evening.  Originally funded by the Vestry to provide dinners once a month December through February, some recent, very generous private contributions will now allow us to extend the dinners to a year-round basis and perhaps even increase our service to twice a month or more, as the need continues to grow.  Ideally, our success will encourage other churches to join us in answering the call.

Our initial Dinner Kitchens have attracted many in need of our support through dinners in the Parish Hall and also packaged dinners for delivery to others at home.   We anticipate that attendance will continue to grow as more and more people learn of the new support we are providing.

Our Dinner Kitchens and Food Bank lunches continue each month.  If you would like to be part of our ministry team preparing meals and serving those most in need … as we respond to God’s call to servanthood … please call me; I’d love to hear from you.

Share the Peace, Tom
